A challenging...scratch that "fricken HARD title".
Well I have to say after playing Fight Night Round 4 for a bit this game is a refreshing take on the boxing genre. You might breeze though the first couple fights but believe you me when you get to Jason Ozuma you may cry. For fans of the series this game is a must. While its close cousin Hajime no Ippo 2: Victorious Road (?) has more options, sans character selection *70 fighters!*, this is the game you want if you dont import.Pros:Slick controlsGreat visualsChallenging fightsA robust story modeand Takamura!Cons:Sometimes controller breakingly difficultOnly the announcer has a voiceYou'll switch between control schemes till you really get a feel for itA couple of hours worth of a learning curveYou will duck, you will weave, or Ozuma and later Sendo will knock your block off.Overall8/10for the fans9.5/10No arcade or practice mode

Way to step it UP
A lot more movement options which make the game feel very real especially when you're stuck on the ropes or in the corner. I also like the fact if your boxer is fast enough you can circle the opponent. Oh yeah the parry/counters were done very well too.

MASHIBA SENPAI NOOOOO!
What to say, the game itself is not worth buying unless you are already a Hajime No Ippo fan. The game isn't the best way to experience the story of the fights. I would only recommend this game if you know even the smallest fighters in the manga. Yes I say manga as the anime still isn't up to where the game is in the manga cannon. The roster of fighters are filled with one time appearances and duplicate characters, for example there is 2 mashibas, 2 Ippo's, 2 takmuras. The actual fighting in the game is far from the flashy fights in the anime, instead the game is just like a normal boxing game, this in my opinion isn't a bad thing. If you paid attention to the boxing techniques that the manga and anime tell you then your already prepared for fighting, corner control, traping, attacking from blind spots, all of the individual tips can be used and its definitely useful.Overall the game is for fans, single player is good but if you have a friend that's just as into the series as you are, thus game will turn into the best way for the two of you to hangout. I know from experience, I can't tell you how many times I've relived the Mashiba vs Sawamura fight. The shotgun move is insane to look at, especially when it's a shotgun vs shotgun.

A sorry sequel
The first Victorious Boxers game was fantastic... one of the best boxing games by far. The sequel however is a sorry attempt to cash in on the fame of the first (and the comic series upon which the games are based). As far as gameplay goes, the sequel uses basically the same controls as the first. The action is faster, but the controls are much more sloppy and it is much more difficult to tell where your punches are landing. After playing the game for a few matches, I soon realized that the gameplay isn't even the point of the game. Unlike the first game, strategy and skill is not required; all you need to do is mash buttons. In actuality, the purpose of the game is to watch the story. The first game was very light on the story, and this one is very heavy on the story. Very heavy. In fact, the cut scenes between fights is almost a verbatim retelling of the comic book the game is based on. For big fans of the series, this might be a selling point, but I couldn't get into it. The graphics are pretty bad and the characters all look pretty freakish and hastily designed.Anyhow, the long and short of it is that if you want a great boxing game, then get the first one. If you are a big, big fan of Hajime no Ippo and you just want to see the story in a different way, then this game may be for you.
