Q: Can it be used through sheet metal?

Hi, this is a wire tracker and wire short & open tester, not a wire finder, so it can't find the wire under sheet metal.

Q: Can it be used through sheet metal?

I would say no to using thru sheet metal, i did use it on shielded wire, large wire harnesses, and single wire test. I had no issues but often needed to be very close to the wire for tracing

Q: So how does it work to find the shorted circuit does it beep louder or have a specific tone and why does it get a static sound around some stuff ?

The procedure for shorts in the manual uses ONLY the sender unit. 1) Hook the alligator clips to the two wires that are plus and minus of the circuit or plus and frame ground. 2) Move the switch to CONT. If there is a short, the green light that is next to CONT will light No sound - just the light. Audio is only on the Receiver and not used for this test.
