You place the marker behind your ball and that is legal and now you can remove the ball. Inside the marker is a level bubble with a cross ingrained on the lens. To set the bubble there is also an orientation line how to put marker behind ball. If bubble is on upper left like a level it is telling you the ground is up hill and slanted left to right. That means the putt will go up hill and to the right. The more off center the more severe the angle. With practice you can read the severity of the curve when you putt.
