The carrier comes with four board support elements that pinch down into a smaller form which are then able to be inserted between the prongs of the carrier assemblies where they are held in place by ridges. After boards are loaded, these support elements are used to create an even outer board edge at the top of the assemblies, allowing for boards of various widths to be transported together. Boards, whether singly or in a pair, are loaded into the slots of the carrier assemblies. Next a locking cable, with a protective sleeve covering it, is strung from the inner side of the units, across the boards' common edge, and is attached to a corresponding hole at the site outer edge of the assemblies and is clamped down. The boards are held in place by a combination of the cable's pressure and the raised, rubberized nubs at their ends of the assemblies' prongs. The cable's tautness can be altered at the inner edge of the carrier assemblies by using one of three hole options to anchor the cable.
