Performance Cookbook for Arm: Understanding and optimizing the hardware performance of Arm-based SoCs

System Performance Verification in Semiconductor systems DesigS
This is an important book. Performance is critical for semiconductor systems and demands attention from architects and implementation teams. Unfortunately, implementation teams have an uneven understanding of architecture optimizations for performance. Worse yet, tools and methodologies to monitor and debug performance through development are still relatively nascent. This book aims to correct both problems, first through a very readable introduction to the evolution and current state of system architecture optimizations, centered on Arm-based systems (though applicable more broadly in my view). Second through a bottom-up methodology to measure, understand, and debug performance, while building a hierarchy of regression testing with early hints to coverage. As far as I am aware this is the first book aiming to educate implementors on the full range of modern silicon system architecture choices and configurability, together with a methodology which should kickstart making performance a first order contributor to any comprehensive verification plan through traffic generation, metrics, beginning ideas for coverage, system VIPs, regression, results visualization, and debug. Certainly not the final word on any of these areas, but I expect to see rapid growth launched by this seminal work.
