Ludwig van Beethoven is universally viewed as one of the most
influential figures in the history of classical music. Since his
lifetime, when he was "universally accepted as the greatest
living composer," Beethoven's music has remained among the most
performed, discussed and reviewed. Scholarly journals are devoted
to analysis of his life and work. He has been the subject of
numerous biographies and monographs, and his music was the
driving force behind the development of Schenkerian analysis. He
is widely considered as among the most important composers, and
along with Bach and Mozart, his music is the most frequently
recorded.
Beethoven's stylistic innovations bridge the Classical and
Romantic periods. The works of his early period brought the
Classical form to its highest expressive level, expanding in
formal, structural, and harmonic terms the musical idiom
developed by predecessors such as Mozart and Haydn. The works of
his middle and late periods were even more forward-looking,
appropriately being categorized in and contributing to the
musical language and thinking of the Romantic era, directly
inspiring other Romantic composers
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a prolific composer and wrote in many
genres. Perhaps his best-admired work is in opera, the piano
concerto and sonata, the symphony, and in the string quartet and
string quintet. Mozart also wrote much work for solo piano, other
forms of chamber music, masses and other religious music, and
numerous dances, divertimentos, and other forms of light
entertainment.
Composition is musical invention, and this invention has a highly
spontaneous element. The mind is a repository of material, the
sum of its influences, and from this substrate composers spin new
yarns. Both the composers were extremely adept improvisers, able
to sit down at an instrument like the keyboard and
extemporaneously create beautiful, captivating music. In their
improvisations, as in their formal compositions, they often made
use of pre-existing forms and formulas which governed the overall
architecture of the music, sometimes following these norms more
or less directly and at other times modifying them to suit their
needs.
